Around 5am on Thursday morning, the 19-metre-long Volition washed onto the rocks near the Bermagui Headland. Holidaying, we climbed the headland to see. Binoculared locals had gathered too, speculating on the cause of the incident - talk of fisherman asleep at the helm and mechanical faults. The heritage wooden ship had just been restored, according to one.

On Thursday afternoon the fishing longliner looked mostly intact, leaning heavily on the port side. Dad and I climbed down for a closer look. There was red netting on the stone, and we were told the ship’s occupants simply rock-hopped to safety in the dark. But that night, the swell picked her up and relentlessly beat her against the rocks and seafloor till little was left complete. The next morning, beaches were closed, and by Saturday a crane was positioned to extract the parts from the rocky terrain. Ropes, doors, bright lifesaving devices, redwood decking, all retrieved and heaped on the shore above. Some of the largest pieces would be retrieved last, reaching around the headland. Some pieces were lost out to sea.

Amorphophallus titanum, still life plant photography black and white. The Corpse Flower at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. After 15 years of growing in the garden's tropical glasshouse in Canberra, the flower reached maturity, blooming for a limited audience this morning. Native to Indonesia, the flower will be in bloom for just 24 hours, and it's hard to say when the event will occur again. Ticket holders in groups of 15 could view (and smell) the flower, which is cultivated in the gardens as part of a global initiative to save the species from extinction.

Ticket holders in groups of 15 could view, photograph (and smell) the flower, taking turns to pose with the imposing species which is cultivated in the gardens as part of a global initiative to save it from extinction. To me, there is a definite Marian or Venusian quality to its structure and affect. A rare and poignant event, I wove my camera between viewers eager to witness the rare event in limited time slots. Amazing.

We took a drive to Sydney International for New Year's Eve. Behind the industrial scape of Tempe, on a nondescript cul-de-sac by a newly routed arterial roadway, I tracked in the progress of incoming heavies. Impossibly large and slow, an Airbus A380-842 (VH-OQB) from Johannesburg sidled a northerly approach, completing a 12-hour transit.
